The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that more than a quarter of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States can be attributed to the transportation sector, which is responsible for more GHG emissions than any other industry in the country. The Nature Conservancy defines carbon footprint as the total amount of GHGs we generate through our actions, such as driving a car, sending garbage to a landfill, or using energy-consuming appliances. At about 16 tons of GHG emissions per person annually, Americans have a larger carbon footprint than most other countries, which average approximately 4 tons per person. Unfortunately, that number is still far too high; in order to prevent a massive global temperature increase, we need a worldwide annual emissions rate of less than 2 tons per person.

In 2020, we proudly accepted the Climate Change Champion Award from the Dane County Office of Energy & Climate Change. By eliminating 100% of our transportation-related emissions after converting from Toyota Priuses to an all-electric fleet, we became one of two recipients with a four-star designation from the agency.
In just over a year, our new electric fleet provided Madison residents and visitors with more than 75,000 rides totaling 2 million miles traveled. To put that into perspective, the average sedan traveling the same distance would release 788 metric tonnes of CO2 gas and use 89,000 gallons of gasoline.
